"Millennium Light"
Goals:

Develop concepts of the future
-
Help students recognize their ability to
artistically visualize and express ideas about the future.

Teach the history of "futureology" -historic
attempts to project the future.

Demonstrate how future events are shaped
by ideas and planning.

Develop a view of the future as a potential
for positive community growth and technological progress.

Provide insight to the "Millennium Light"
art project.
Objectives:
1. Through a discussion of the student's
individual notions of the future and examples of the future projections
using literature and cinema containing ideas about the future-provide a
framework and a context to develop concepts and inspire artworks about
the future.

Use The Millennium Book (1), Century's
End (2) and (3) the Internet as reference texts for researching historic
events and notions to help establish a conceptual context for understanding
future time.

What is the future? When is the future?
Why is the future? Where is the future? How can the future be shaped? How
old will you be in the year 2,000? Where will you be in the year 2,000?

The role and development of calendars in
society.

The significance of the year 2000.
-
Understanding the symbolism and creative
concepts behind the "millennium Light" art project.
2. Shaping the future:
-
Drawings and narratives of what they will
begin doing in the year 2000.

Mural depicting how technological growth
could effect Glenn by the year 2000. (group project)

Establish an internet news-group forum,
"The Future", for digital dialogue with other elementary schools- locally
and internationally.

Create multi-media think space that challenges
everyone's imagination.

Create a "Virtual Time Capsule" on the
internet to be opened on the date of the new millennium.
