Project Description

During the Summers of 2000 and 2001, the Inflatable Light Workshop Collaborative has envisioned a public statewide artistic collaborative celebration to inspire an optimistic view of the 21st Century. Using light as the medium, the uniqueness and shape of our state gives us the vision to use old and new light technologies to illuminate and define the water edges of Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas.

Illumination will occur via community friendship campfires strategically placed every coastal mile around the shores of Michigan and through laser light in selected lighthouses. The event will be documented and promoted nationwide by aerial photography and/or available satellite/shuttle technology. Although many Michigan communities will have their own individual millennium celebrations, this event is intended to involve Michigan citizens who wish to participate in a large statewide event.

The project will showcase Michigan as a state of community spirit, progressive thinking in art and technology and great physical beauty. As a component to the event, there will be an Education curriculum developed by the Michigan Millennium Project that focuses on science, social studies and history in the past, present and future.

2000 GOOD HARBOR BAY REHEARSAL:
The  "Light The Shore" 2000 GOOD HARBOR BAY REHEARSAL (Leelanau County) was a successful trial run of the campfire component and aerial documentation. See our documentation from the rehearsal that took place on October 13th 2000.

2001 FINAL EVENT:
The tentative date for the final event is still pending, but we are currently researching Labor Day Weekend 2001.

Be certain to keep checking our Web Site for date updates for the 2001 FINAL EVENT.
